Sheffield to Melbourne: My Recruitment Journey with Miller Leith

I recently relocated from Sheffield, England to join Miller Leith in Melbourne. Their people-first approach, unwavering support, and cultural benefits made my decision to move easier than ever!

My name is Greg – I have recently joined Miller Leith from the sunny shores of Yorkshire, England. I’ve never really found jumping on a plane, travelling to the other side of the world and starting a new job a daunting task – more of an adventure to better my skills. Meeting new people is a passion of mine and being able to bring my own flair is something that I value.

Australia has always had a pull on me, from the beautiful landscape to the powerhouse cities and some of the unique wildlife. Leaving the UK in the height of winter to head into summer isn’t always a bad plan. The decision to move was made back in 2019 when I first visited Melbourne, and I said to myself, “I’m going to live there one day.” I’d go ahead and say everything happens for a reason because fast forward four years and a sprinkle of a global pandemic, and now armed with four years of recruitment experience, I made it in a much better position than I would have back then.

So, why Miller Leith?

There are a few reasons that made my decision that little bit easier…
Meeting a potential new employer from abroad via Zoom meetings at various times of the morning from 11 PM – 6 AM does have its challenges.  Especially when you have more than one interview, meeting multiple people and companies and all after a long day of work. In saying that, there were a few defining features that made the decision to go with Miller Leith, an easy one.

In the initial instance, I was able to meet many people, from who I would be directly reporting, to the whole office on Zoom and to the founders & partners, Joe and Stephen. Even being on the other side of the world, the process was really smooth and thorough. Everyone I spoke to had very good things to say – which was expected. The constant message of a people-first approach for clients, candidates and employees, unwavering support, cultural benefits,  and the general feel of the office was something that was reiterated over and over again, which left me in a positive mood at the end of each engagement. I really do thank everyone who left that lasting impression on me, and since starting with the business I know I have made the right decision.

“Is this normal in Australia?”

Now don’t get me wrong, we work in recruitment- everyone can talk a good talk and I’ve always taken some aspects of a business with a pinch of salt but starting with Miller Leith they really do walk the walk. Even prior to starting at the business I attended Friday drinks with the team, went out for lunch on my birthday and even had the whole company wish me an Aussie Happy Birthday – did I mention I hadn’t even started yet?

From the get go, I was welcomed and honestly I had to fight people off from wanting to take me out for lunch! Is this normal in Australia? Because it honestly blew me away.

Worried about moving over and a pint of beer setting you back about £8? Thinking the flight might be a bit long? Fancy a chat about a relocation?

If you’re considering making a move like I did, I highly recommend taking the leap. It’s been an incredible adventure so far, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If you’re looking to build or strengthen your sales team, or if you’re a candidate looking just for a change of roles or careers, I encourage you to reach out to me at greg@millerleith.com.au or 0403 534 163. I’d love to chat and see how I can help you. Don’t hesitate to get in touch!
