To sell or not to sell: A guide to starting a career in sales

1. People Skills

In sales, you need to be able to connect with people and build trusted relationships to make them feel comfortable enough to open up to you. This will assist you in understanding how your product or service can be of value to them. People are more receptive to hearing from someone they trust

2. Active Listening

The job is to understand the client or customers’ needs; said and implied to help provide the best possible solution. So, being able to read between the lines is quintessential

3. Effective Communication

Each consumer is unique. Active listening helps you understand what they’re looking for, but being an effective communicator can help you pinpoint exactly why what you’re selling is relevant to them

4. Negotiation Skills

A win-win situation is always ideal but not always possible. At such times, a salesperson can apply their negotiation skills to help both sides to find a mutually beneficial common ground

5. Time Management

Simply put, closing a deal swiftly without rushing the process is crucial. It is important to be able to organise your days to efficiently and make the most of the available time

6. Learning from Rejection

Sales is all about trial and error; you get to learn from past mistakes, get better at objection handling, understand your target market better and improve your sales strategies

6. Take on a sales role

At the end of the day, you’ll know if you’re good at something only if you give it a real go. Take on a sales role, it will help you get some real work experience, and you get to learn from your daily experiences too!
